Suspect arrested in Escanaba female’s slaying

ESCANABA – A suspect has been arrested in the alleged murder of a female at an Escanaba residence Wednesday, according to Escanaba Public Safety.

Police found the victim when officers responded to a 9-1-1 emergency medical call at 206 Stephenson Avenue at 4:19 a.m.

“During the early morning hours, Escanaba Public Safety officers were dispatched to a call of a female with an object in her throat,” stated Escanaba Public Safety Director Ken Vanderlinden in a news release issued Wednesday afternoon.

“During the investigation, it was determined that an assault had occurred which ended in her death,” added Vanderlinden.

Police later arrested a suspect in connection with her death, charging the person with open murder/homicide, according to the news release.

Kallay Randal Batchelor, 36, of 226 North 18th Street in Escanaba, was charged in Delta County District Court via video conference shortly before 10 a.m. with homicide/open murder, statutory and short form, a life felony.

He is being held at the Delta County Jail without bond and does not currently have an attorney.

Personnel from the Michigan State Police Forensics Lab Crime Scene Unit from Marquette were called in to collect evidence at the local residence Wednesday morning.

The property was taped off with yellow police tape while investigators photographed the crime scene and gathered various evidence. Shortly after noon, Rampart Ambulance personnel removed a body from the home.

Escanaba Public Safety was not releasing any further information on the case pending the ongoing investigation.
