Severe storms on the way

MARQUETTE – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until noon today for much of the southwestern Upper Peninsula.

Dickinson, Menominee, Gogebic, and Iron counties are included under the watch.

A severe thunderstorm warning is effect until 11:15 a.m. for Florence and Forest counties in Wisconsin.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette is tracking a line of severe storms is moving east at about 50 miles per hour.

According to the NWS, the storms should reach Iron Mountain by 11:15 a.m., Menominee County by 11:40 a.m., and as far as southern Delta County by 1 p.m. if they hold together.

Meteorologists said strong wind gusts, possibly as high as 70 miles per hour, can be expected and may cause tree damage and power outages. Large hail is also possible if the storms continue to remain severe.
