Ruth Pretto

LORETTO – Ruth “Andy” Pretto, 83, went to be with our Lord peacefully in her sleep, on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, at Freeman Nursing and Rehabilitation in Kingsford.

She was born in Iron River on Dec. 15, 1930, the daughter of the late Gustav and Viola (Wilke) Casagranda. Ruth graduated from Shawano High School in 1948.

She married Robert Pretto on Nov. 19, 1949, in St. Agnes Church in Iron River. He preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 2005.

Ruth and Robert moved to Detroit for work and to raise a family. In June of 1972, they returned to Loretto and operated Pretto Service for 17 years. In 1989, they retired to Hamilton Lakes.

Ruth was a member of St. Barbara’s Church, Senior Choir, TOPS, Loretto Women’s Auxiliary and the Norway Birthday Club.

Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She liked flower gardening, playing cards, going to the casino, and taking care of the family dog, Roxie.

Ruth is survived by her three children Sandra Hamel of Winston Salem, N.C., Debbie (Jim) Peterson of Norway and Robert Pretto Jr. of Norway; grandchildren, Tony (Jen) Adams, Brian (Sara Lagina) Adams, Kelly (Shawn) Hodgins, Heather (Jay) Weaver, Katie Peterson and Dan (Samantha) Peterson, Jeremy (Carrie) Pretto and Danica (Tyler Swanson) Pretto, Jeff (Amanda) Hamel, Kristen (Michael) Meddaugh and Laurie (Brian) Morris; great-grandchildren, Zandria, Taylor, Bryce, Lauren, Alana, Asher, Logan, Katelyn, Kaylee, Isabella, Carson, Brent and Luke; caring brothers, Peter and Joe Casagranda; loving sisters, Chloe Peterson, Rosemarie Ferguson; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friend, Dorothy Meneghini.

Ruth was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Chris Hamel; brothers, Dan and Tony Casagranda and Harold Reinke; and sisters, Helen Foccault and Louise Smith.

Family will greet friends on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Barbara Catholic Church in Vulcan.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Barbara’s Church with Fr. Timothy Ekaitis presiding.

Interment will be held at Norway Township Cemetery at a later date.

The family request that memorial contributions may be made in Ruth’s name to the American Cancer Society.
