Lyla Wilmer

IRON MOUNTAIN – Lyla Jean “Precious Grandma” Wilmer, 80, of Iron Mountain, a longtime resident of Granite Bluff, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014, at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette. She was surrounded by her loving family when she passed.

Lyla was born on May 18, 1934, in Spalding.

Lyla graduated from Florence High School in 1953. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Pine Manor and at Florence Villa. In 1978 she received her LPN degree from Bay de Noc Community College and worked as a LPN at Hyland Nursing Home.

She married Charles Wilmer on Oct. 22, 1955, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Iron Mountain. The couple spent their winters in Gulf Shores, Ala.

Lyla was a devoted grandmother, caring for and playing with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Her passion was knitting, for which she won many awards at area craft shows. She also enjoyed flower gardening, doll collecting and traveling.

Lyla had a strong faith in the Lord. She was a member of Maranatha Assembly of God Church, where she volunteered in the nursery and the toddler’s Kids Club.

Lyla is survived by her husband of 58 years, Charles; three children, Jean DeDie of Madison, Denise (Mark) Edwards of Iron Mountain, and Jeffrey Wilmer of Norway; five sisters, Shirley Stillman of Oklahoma City, Okla., Faye Galvan of Waukesha, Patricia (Richard) Whitfield of Fort Wayne, Ind., Bernadine Johnson of Kingsford, and Lita (Nick) Bergstrom of Seattle, Wash.; nine grandchildren, Paula (Chad) Paplham, Charlene (Shane) Norberg, Joshua (Missi) Dorman, Jeremy Dorman, Nicole Dorman, Jonah (Amanda) Dorman, Angela (Joshua) Reed, Crystal Bennett, and Dawn Bennett; nine great-grandchildren, Dawson, Trei, Karly, Madison, Chloe, Alaina, Auralia, Reihannen, and Izayah; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Daniel Wilmer; birth parents Vernon and Lois Robinson; her adoptive parents Loren and Melvina Robinson; and many brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Marantha Assembly of God Church in Kingsford.

Funeral services will follow Friday at 1p.m. at the church. Rev. David Wilton will officiate.

Burial will be in the Channing Cemetery.

The family drew much comfort from 2 Corinthians 5:6 ” … to be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord.”
