A street named Santilli

CRYSTAL FALLS – Former Trojans head football coach Bill Santilli drove in the Forest Park Schools parking lot Friday afternoon and found a crowd waiting.

A few minutes later, he was standing on Santilli Way, formerly named Eighth Street.

“Absolutely shocked,” said Santilli with a big smile. “Amazing.”

Santilli retired from coaching in February after 18 years with the Trojans. Forest Park reached the playoffs 17 straight seasons and reached the state finals seven times with a title in 2007.

Santilli Way is adjacent to the Dick Mettlach Field and the Forest Park practice site.

Troy Margoni, Santilli’s radio broadcast partner, worked with Crystal Falls mayor Janet Hendrickson and the Crystal Falls City Council in making the street change. The street switch was kept secret from Santilli until the ceremony.

Hendrickson read a resolution from the Crystal Falls City Council recognizing Santilli’s “dedication and leadership to the Forest Park football program and the Crystal Falls community as a whole.”

Family and friends along with Forest Park coaches and players turned out for the sign unveiling.
