Squirrel causes power outage

IRON MOUNTAIN – More than 2,300 We Energies customers in Quinnesec, Niagara, Wis., and Aurora, Wis. were without power for nearly two hours on Friday afternoon.

Brian Manthey of We Energies said that outage occurred at about 3 p.m. when a squirrel got into a one-transformer substation in Niagara.

The squirrel came into contact with some fuses, which caused an electrical short in the equipment.

All power was restored as of 4:53 p.m., said Manthey.

Besides residential customers, the outage affected the traffic lights at the U.S. 2/U.S. 141 junction and the U.S. 2/Lake Antoine Road intersection, both located in Quinnesec.

Law enforcement officers were on scene to direct traffic.
