Charles Honkala

KINGSFORD – Charles R. “Cupcake” Honkala, 72, of Kingsford, passed away on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at Dickinson County Hospital System.

Charles was born on July 8, 1942, in Barberton, Ohio. He was the son of the late Lauri and Eleanor (Bain) Honkala. Charles served in the Army National Guard.

He worked as a machine operator in the White Pine Copper Mine for many years. Following his retirement from the mine he lived in Amasa for several years. Charles has been a resident of Kingsford for the past three years.

Charles also worked for the snowmobile club operating the trail groomer for several years. He loved to fish. He also enjoyed doing odd jobs around the house and helping out his friends.

One of his favorite activities was taking drives on the back roads around Amasa, White Pine and Iron River.

He is survived by his daughter, Connie Honkala of Iron Mountain; sister, Ellen (Ralph) Chase of Lyndonville, Vt. and a special friend, Jolin Honkala of Kingsford.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Honkala and sister, Sandra Lang.

Private family memorial services will be held at a later date.
