Niagara Legion baseball eliminated at state tourney
UNION GROVE, Wis. – Niagara American Legion Cretton/Tutas Post 136 baseball team bowed out of the 17U Junior state baseball tournament, falling to host Union Grove 7-0 on Friday and Manitowoc 6-2 on Saturday.
Union Grove pounded out seven hits and scored five runs in the first inning of Friday’s contest, finding gaps all over the field.
“We hit the ball well, but right at Union Grove defenders,” coach Dale Blagec noted.
In Saturday’s elimination game, Manitowoc scored first after a single, passed ball and a balk.
Niagara got on the board in the fourth. Joe Murvich led off with a single to left and scored when Hunter Kaldor doubled over the centerfielder’s head. Another run came in on a double steal thanks to a bad throw to third.
Niagara maintained a 2-1 lead until the sixth inning. Manitowoc scored two times to take the lead and padded it with a three-run seventh, taking advantage of two walks, two hits and two errors.
“I am extremely proud of this first year American Legion team consisting of Justin Bal, Ethan Blagec, Cody Carlson,Kevin Evosevich, John Edwardsen, Mike Faull, Hunter Kaldor, Landon Kaldor, Bob Kleiman, Patrick Moreau, Joe Murvich and Dane Vandenheuvel,” Blagec said.
