Miss Michigan Teen USA seeks donations for competition expenses

GLADSTONE – Miss Michigan Teen USA 2014 is a senior at Gladstone Area High School and has ties to the Kingsford area. And now Iris Robare will be representing Michigan at the Miss Teen USA competition in the Bahamas on Aug. 1-2.

Iris is the daughter of Craig and Laura Karttunen and the granddaughter of Sally and Doug Karttunen of Kingsford.

Iris, 17, is the second ever Miss Michigan Teen USA crowned from the Upper Peninsula and also the first Youth Governor of the state from the U.P. since the 1950s.

Although portions of her pageant expenses are covered, she noted that a lot of it is her responsibility. Iris is reaching out to people in the U.P. asking that they please consider making a contribution on her behalf.

“Through hard work, personal sacrifice and living a life representative of these two accomplishments, I have been blessed with a unique opportunity. I stand as an example that we aren’t defined by stereotypes and that we shouldn’t limit ourselves from that which is available to be achieved,” Iris said.

She added that she is proud to represent Michigan at the Miss Teen USA competition. “This is truly a once in a lifetime experience. I hope to make Michigan proud and bring home the crown.”
