Green Bay man dead after police pursuit near Goodman

MARINETTE, Wis. – A suspect being pursued by police in northern Marinette County was found dead outside his vehicle late Thursday afternoon, according to the Marinette County Sheriff’s Department.

It is believed that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, said Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve. No officers or citizens were injured.

Marinette County Dispatch received a call shortly before 3 p.m. reporting that a man in a black Chevrolet Tahoe had shot at and hit another vehicle on U.S. 141 just south of Wausaukee, Wis, according to Sauve

He said that the victims kept the Tahoe in sight, and they reported that it pulled off eastbound in Wausaukee, then appeared behind them and shot their vehicle again.

Sauve said the suspect was located by deputies and fled at a high rate of speed, turning west on U.S. 8 in Pembine, driving recklessly and crossing the center line into oncoming traffic.

The suspect reached out the window and fired a hand gun at the pursuing deputies, and the chase continued northbound on Shrine Road in Goodman, Wis., Sauve said.

He added that the suspect vehicle was lost on Shrine Road, apparently after it traveled east on a two-rut road. Officers then spread out in the area, and an armored vehicle and bearcat units from other agencies were in-route.

When the armored vehicle arrived, officers went on the two-rut road and located the suspect, believed to be a 35-year-old man from Green Bay, Wis., lying face-down and unresponsive outside the Tahoe, according to Sauve.

The matter remains under investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Department.

The department received assistance from the Niagara Police Department, Laona Police Department, Crandon Police Department, deputies from the Dickinson County, Forest County, Florence County, Oneida County, and Brown County sheriff’s departments, Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wardens, Goodman Rescue, Beacon Ambulance, and Marinette County Coroner George Smith.
