NORWAY – Louise (Maisonneuve) Schafer of Norfolk, Va., formerly of Norway passed away on Monday, July 14, 2014, at Harbour Pointe Rehabilitation Center.
She was born April 11, 1920, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, daughter of the late Ernest and Eliza Maisonneuve. She and her family moved to Escanaba, in the late 1920s. She graduated from Escanaba High School in 1938.
She worked in Chicago and St. Louis before returning to Escanaba in 1945. She married Anthony “Bud” Schafer on April 27, 1946. Bud and Louise lived in Norway, moving to Norfolk in 2006 to be near their daughter.
Louise worked at Montgomery Ward as credit manager and later worked for many years as an accountant for the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital retiring in 1981. She was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church in Norway and was active in the Daughters of Isabella. She was an avid bridge player and a member of the Red Hatters. She enjoyed square dancing, reading, cooking and watching her favorite game shows. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and became a great grandmother two years ago.
She is survived by her two children Nancy Schafer (Steven Wallace) of Norfolk and Anthony Schafer (Susan) of Toledo, Ohio; three grandchildren, Garrett McAuliffe of Santa Cruz, Calif., Maura Ambrosio of Norfolk, and Anthony Schafer IV of Toledo, Ohio; a great-grandchild, Connor Ambrosio; a sister Beatrice Gasman of Tacoma, Wash. , sister-in-law Dorothy Trepanier of Iron Mountain and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Anthony; her parents, Ernest and Eliza; sisters Lucille and Lillian; and a brother Robert.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 24, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway.
A funeral Mass will follow Thursday at 11 a.m. Fr. Tim Ekatitis will celebrate the Mass.
Burial will be in Norway Cemetery .
