Busy rainy days make up for lazy sunny ones

IRON MOUNTAIN – Just like the song says, “Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.” But that’s a good thing. I need to be down: downstairs cleaning a closet, down on my knees washing the floors, and with head down ironing. It’s not that I want to do any of these things, but they have to be done, and I am sure not in the mood to do them on a warm, sunny, summer day.

One should only have so much fun in the sun before he should go in, close the windows, and get something done. That something may be housework, but it can also be a project that’s been just waiting for that rainy day. Just as the first warm day of summer pulls you outside (This year you may have had to step over your snowshoes first to get there), a rainy day can keep you inside (to do things like put away your snowshoes).

I have never been a fan of reading in the sun (it makes me squint even with my glasses), but cloudy days seem to provide not only the right lighting but the right ambience. There’s nothing like some steady drizzle to set the mood for a good romance, or a little thunder for a mystery story. Or you could read my column from last week. Oh, you wrapped the fish you caught in that paper? Well, I’ve had worse criticism.

I hate to bring this up, but don’t you have some letters to write that have been postponed? No, I don’t mean a text message or a quick email response. I mean a handwritten note to a friend or even a thinking-of-you card. If it takes some lightning outside to spark your imagination, you might find the words come easier during a storm than while sipping iced tea in a lawn chair. Besides, chirping birds can be very distracting. Or how about making that phone call to a friend you have been putting off? I know he is long-winded, but as long as you are stuck in the house, you can dust or clean the bathroom with the other hand. (Yes, I have done this many times. Sometimes, when I see a certain name on the “caller ID” I just automatically pick up the furniture polish.)

Look at it this way: if it didn’t rain, you’d have to be out there in the hot sun watering your plants. You’d have to drag the hose across the lawn and stand there for several minutes while swatting mosquitoes and deer flies. Then you’ll notice the weeds that have to be pulled, and a patch of poison ivy that needs spraying, and that fence that needs painting, and No, it’s better to let the rain do its work outside while you do yours inside. You can finally organize your desk while looking out the window and reflecting onWhat is that? The sun is out? Hey! What are you doing inside on a nice day like this? —
