Niagara Legion opens regional with victory

LUXEMBURG, Wis. – Niagara scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to earn a 5-3 win over Bay Port in the opening game of the American Legion junior AA?baseball tournament at Luxemburg-Casco High School Thursday evening.

“This was big, getting a win right out of the gate,” coach Jim Bal noted.

Joe Murvich opened Niagara’s seventh with a double, coming home with the go-ahead run when Hunter Kaldor tagged a triple. Kaldor added an insurance marker with a steal of home.

Bobby Kleiman, who relieved Niagara John Edwardsen in the sixth, held Bay Port off in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

A see-saw battle, Niagara led 1-0 after three innings, but Bay Port took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Niagara scored twice for a 3-2 lead in the fifth, but Bay Port answered with a tying run in the bottom half.

Niagara overcame a 13-strikeout performance by Bay Port’s starting pitcher in the victory.

Niagara continues play this evening, facing Kewaunee County.

Other teams competing in the tournament include Marinette, Green Bay Shockers and Pulaski.

Champion advances to the state tournament at Union Grove.

In other baseball action from Thursday, Norway’s 9-10 year old Little League stars were eliminated from district play, falling to Menominee 9-1 at Escanaba’s Dickson Field.

Menominee moves on to face Escanaba in the final, needing two wins to claim the title.
