Chase suspect died of gunshot wound
MARQUETTE – Michigan State Police said an autopsy conducted Tuesday determined an Alger County man who died Monday after a chase with police died of injuries from a gunshot wound.
Timothy Mitchell, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene, which was located along Buckhorn Road a mile or so west of Federal Forest Highway 13. Troopers are investigating the officer-involved shooting at the request of the Munising City Police Department.
Police said the shooting occurred after a report of an altercation in Christmas and a pursuit by a Munising police officer down Federal Forest Highway 13 and then Buckhorn Road, where the fleeing suspect’s red passenger car crashed. The shooting followed, police said.
The Munising police officer was placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation takes place. Police said Nelson and Munising City Manager Devin Olson decided to withhold the officer’s name until the conclusion of the probe, as is standard practice.
Troopers said the autopsy was performed at Marquette General Hospital with other officers present. The official report is pending from the pathologist, including the results of toxicology samples obtained during the autopsy.
