Johnson Falls recreation area shut until July 31
WAUSAUKEE, Wis. -Due to required maintenance, Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) will close the recreation area below the dam at Johnson Falls on the Peshtigo River effective now through July 31.
WPS will perform maintenance on the substation which will increase the potential for heavy water flow over the rocks downstream of the dam.
“Even though the siren sounds when gates initially open, it will not sound again if the gate opens wider,” explained Hydro Operations Supervisor Ed Brandt. “Water flow conditions could be unusual to people who frequently recreate below the dam, and out of concern for safety, we have worked with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to close the area.”
WPS operates 17 hydroelectric facilities on the Wisconsin, Peshtigo, Tomahawk, and Menominee Rivers and encourages safe recreational activities in areas above and below the dams.
