GFWC awards scholarships
IRON MOUNTAIN – Three college students have received scholarships from the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Greater Federation of Women’s Club.
Michelle Bargo of Iron Mountain received a $500 scholarship from the Sullivan-Parmalee-Rahm Fund. She is currently attending Bay West College in Iron Mountain pursuing a nursing degree. She maintains a high grade point average. Bargo is a Iron Mountain High School graduate and works in the healthcare field.
The Sullivan-Parmalee-Rahm Fund was established by gifts to the club which have been invested. Interest earned is used for annual scholarships to female highs school graduates enrolled in Bay de Noc West.
“Careful and dedicated management of the fund has resulted in an award of $500 scholarship,” said a GFWC spokesperson.
Stacy Bartl of Kingsford, also a student at Bay West College pursuing a degree in social work, was awarded the Gal-A-Rama Scholarship totaling $1,000.
This scholarship is a result of a Gal-A-Rama fund-raising event held by the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Women’s Club and the scholarship is possible due to the hard work and generous participation of the local area.
“The Club looks forward to future opportunity to again award this scholarship,” she said.
Erin Drehr of Iron Mountain received the Ellen K. Russell scholarship totaling $1,000. She is a student at the University of Michigan pursuing a degree majoring in biology with a minor in women’s studies.
The Russell Scholarship was established by a gift to the Club more than 40 years ago. The goal of the gift is to award a scholarship to a woman student attending a four year program.
“The scholarship committee was impressed by the quality of student effort and the variety of fields of study presented by the applicants. The club urges all women to continue to pursue their educational goals,” the spokesperson said.
