Tigers great missing from book

ScuttleBu(r)t …

There’s a Detroit Tiger great missing from “The 50 Greatest Tigers Every Fan Should Know” (Blue River Press).

Breitung Township’s John Hiller, a relief pitcher with stellar credentials, can’t be found in Lew Freedman’s book.

“It was a tough call to leave out John Hiller,” Freedman said. “He was a very good player.

“There are definitely worthy players who missed out on the 50. With a franchise that old it was bound to happen.”

Hiller recorded 38 saves with a .144 ERA in 1973. The following season, he chalked up 17 wins in relief. The left-hander compiled career marks of 2.83 ERA and 125 saves.

And all this after a heart attack interrupted his career.

Willie Hernandez was the only Tiger relief pitcher to make the book. Mark (The Bird) Fidrych was also omitted.

“Fidrych may have been responsible for one wonderful summer, and for several great moments in Tigers history, but he cannot be placed on a list of the 50 greatest Tigers because he had such a short career,” Freedman said.

Ty Cobb, Al Kaline and Charlie Gehringer topped Freedman’s book …
