Melvin Jayne

IRON MOUNTAIN – Melvin R. Jayne, 79, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at his home. Melvin was born on Feb. 13, 1935, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Kenneth and Agnes (Bazilli) Jayne.

He has been a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain and was a 1953 graduate of Iron Mountain High School.

Melvin served in the United States Army during the Korean War era from 1953-1955. He married Rose Marie Swor on Jan. 17, 1959, in Iron Mountain and in January celebrated 55 years of marriage. Melvin was a proud member of Laborers Union Local 1329. He worked in construction as a supervisor and general foreman for more than 40 years, retiring in 1984.

Melvin was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Iron Mountain Elks Lodge. As a member of the Viking Ski Club, he jumped Giant Pine Mountain several times. He was a talented woodworker and enjoyed building things for the kids. He also enjoyed tomato gardening and having coffee and spirited political discussions with the retired gentlemen of Hardee’s.

Even after his retirement, he was always interested in the building and construction activity in the area. He was an avid Detroit Tiger and Green Bay Packer fan. Melvin loved attending his children and grandchildren’s activities and sporting events.

He is survived by his wife, Rose; sons, Michael Jayne of Iron Mountain, Jeff (Connie) Jayne of Iron Mountain, Tom (Jill) Jayne of Iron Mountain and Bob (Mary) Jayne of Iron Mountain; brother, Ken (Gisela) Jayne of Carmel, Ind.; sister, Mary (Jerry) Parrott of Minnesota; five grandchildren, Kellin, Taylor and Marlo Jayne, Max and Alex Jayne. He also leaves nieces, nephews and a sister-in-law, Barb Marinelli.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Helen and Jack Swor and a sister-in-law, Paula Swor.

Visitation will be today from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Memorial services will be today at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to the Iron Mountain High School Auditorium Alumni Chairs.
