Soda Pups to appear at the library

IRON MOUNTAIN – The Dickinson County Library has a full schedule of events for the next two weeks.

Upcoming activities include:

Monday, June 16

Soda Pups Dog Show, 11 a.m. at the Norway city hall and 3 p.m. at the Dickinson County Library. The dogs, named after soft drinks (Ginger Ale, Dr. Pepper, Squirt and Sierra Mist) perform tricks, showing off their talents and abilities. Master entertainer Jack Zolkowski gives a fun explanation of each dog’s originating country and how they were used, making this program both fun and educational. This program is perfect for all ages, and is sponsored by the Friends of the Dickinson County Library.

Tuesday, June 17

ABC Science: C is for Color, 10 a.m. at the Dickinson County Library. Learn the ABCs of science at the Dickinson County Library and Norway Library in June. Each session will focus on a different theme that will teach kids the various principles of science with stories, science demonstrations, activities, and crafts. This program is open to children under age six and is sponsored by Drs. Michael and Maria Occhietti and family.

Wednesday, June 18

Teen Iron Chef, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Dickinson County Library. Inspired by the TV shows Iron Chef and Iron Chef: America, teens will compete to create delicious dessert creations while incorporating a secret ingredient. This program is open to grades 4 and up, and registration is required. To sign-up for one of the Dickinson County Library sessions, call 774-1218. Teens need to only sign up for one of the program times. This program is sponsored by MJ Electric.

Thursday, June 19

Word Gardens, 10 a.m. at the Dickinson County Library, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the North Dickinson Branch, and 1 p.m. at the Norway Library. This program will introduce kids to the wonderful world of gardening. Each child will create “adjective flowers” after learning about the powerful descriptive world those words can paint in writing. At Dickinson County Library, kids will be given a flower to plant in the courtyard. At Norway Library, kids will be given a flower to take home and plant. This program is for kids in grades K-5, and is sponsored by the Friends of the Dickinson County Library.

Friday, June 20

Mad Scientist Club: Electricity, 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Dickinson County Library. Students will have the opportunity to learn all about electronics using a Van de Graff generator, snap circuits and alternative energy. Science has never been more fun. This program is for kids in grades 1-5.

Gross Me Out at the Library, 10 a.m. at the Dickinson County Library. Kids will learn all about the science of “grossology” at the library. They will learn the “scoop on scat,” have a watermelon seed spitting contest, make exploding sandwiches, and eat tasty treats like “Boogers on a Stick” and “Day-Old Bath Water.” This program is for kids in grades 2-8, and registration is required. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Dickinson County Library.

Page by Page Book Club, 6 p.m. at the Dickinson County Library. The Page by Page Book Club selection for June is “The Lost Child of Philomena Lee” by Martin Sixsmith. There are no reading guides available for this book. The Page by Page Book Club is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend.

Gemstones and Birthstones, 6 p.m. at the Dickinson County Library. Led by certified gemologist Sherri Erickson of Erickson Jewelers, this program will go in depth about the shiny brilliance of gemstones and birthstones. Become a world traveler as Sherri discusses her diamond buying trips to Antwerp. This program is perfect for those curious about sparkly stones.

Friday, June 27

Ann Arbor Hands-On Science Museum: Super Science, 10 a.m. at the Dickinson County Library. This team delivers a fun, education-based, hands-on program that will get kids thinking. Ten stations of science activities are set up for students to experiment. This program is perfect for kids of all ages, and is sponsored by Dr. Nagaraju and Rupa Choragudi.

Ann Arbor Hands-On Science Museum: Crime Scene, 2 p.m. at the Dickinson County Library. Kids will be immersed into the fascinating world of forensics as they work together to solve a mock crime by examining evidence, confirming or refuting their suspicions by asking questions, and come to a logical conclusion based upon their findings. All super sleuths in training won’t want to miss this. This program is for kids in grades 4 and up and is sponsored by Hahner Law Offices, P.C.
