State commanders, auxiliary president to attend American Legion Summer Convention

ESCANABA – State commander of the American Legion Department of Michigan, Ray Moore of Lake City, Mich., president of the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Michigan, Sandra Snyder of Livonia, Mich. and state detachment commander of the Sons of the American Legion, Mike Bougner of Lake Orion, Mich. will be attending the U.P. American Legion Association 2014 Summer Convention will be held June 13-14 in Escanaba. The convention is expected to draw 200 legionnaires, auxiliary members and Sons of the American legion from around the U.P. and state to conduct their annual business.

Schedule for the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary is as follows:

Friday, June 13 – Noon, registration opens; 6:30 p.m., Joint opening session: Gladstone American Legion Color Guard, National Anthem performed by Jaycee Fassio, memorial service by the UPAA; 7:15 p.m., Joint opening session meeting; 8 p.m., 40 et 8 Petite Promenade; 8 p.m., committee meetings, Mr. Entertainment (providing karaoke), shuttles to and from the casino.

Saturday, June 14 – Breakfast at the hotels; 8 a.m., registration continues; 8:30 a.m., service officer’s school; 9 a.m., Sons of the American Legion meeting, UPAA meeting; 10:30 a.m., 11th and 12th District meetings; noon, past 5th Zone commander’s luncheon at Hereford and Hops, recess for lunch, luncheon on your own; 1:30 p.m., U.P. Association of American Legion Posts meeting, guest speakers will be present to speak on legion programs and VSO’s in the U.P.; 5:30 p.m., social hour; 6:30 p.m., banquet, color guard, Gladstone American Legion, National Anthem performed by Joleen Belmore.

Sunday, June 15 – Breakfast at the hotels; 8 a.m.,

(All meetings will be held at the Quality Suites and Motel. All times are Eastern.)

Co-hostess will be Powers Post 244 and Hermansville Post 340.

The co-hosts have sent out information to all posts. The hotel will hold a black of rooms for the Legion only until May 15, so registration is encouraged now. The Quality Inn can be reached at (906) 789-1200 or can call the Super 8 which is an alternative hotel at (906) 786-7819.
