‘Court’ scam in Dickinson
IRON MOUNTAIN – Residents are advised that an email message purporting to be an important Dickinson County court document or summons is a scam, Dickinson County Clerk-Register of Deeds Dolly Cook said Monday.
The court would never conduct such business by email, Cook said at a county board meeting Monday.
The clerk speculated that the email likely contains an attachment that will launch a virus if opened.
Cook said she fielded several calls Monday from residents concerned about such emails. She advised that the messages be ignored or reported to authorities.
The federal judiciary issued a similar alert earlier this year. Unless you are actively involved in a case in federal court and have consented to receive court notifications electronically, you generally will not be served with court documents electronically, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts has advised.
