Names released in fatal Ishpeming accident

ISHPEMING – The names of those involved in a fatal collision between a motorcycle and Ryder truck in Ishpeming Thursday afternoon have been released.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:20 p.m. on U.S. 41 at Lakeshore Drive in Ishpeming.

The driver of the motorcycle, 64-year-old Gary James Kappler of Ahmeek, Mich., and his passenger, 52-year-old Diane Lovan Palosaari of Mohwawk, Mich., both died at the scene of the accident, according to the Ishpeming Police Department.

Chief of Police Dan Willey said preliminary investigation shows that the driver of the Ryder truck, 19-year-old Raymond Michael Anderson of Ishpeming, may have turned into the path of the motorcycle, which had the right of way. Anderson had been in the left turn lane on U.S. 41, facing west, and attempted to turn south onto Lakeshore Drive.

Anderson received minor injuries at sought his own treatment at Bell Hospital, Willey said.

The motorcycle, a 2011 Harley Davidson, was east bound on U.S. 41 at the time of the accident. According to police, Kappler and Palosaari were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident.

Autopsies were performed at Marquette General Hospital on Friday. The accident remains under investigation. When investigation is complete, it will be reviewed by the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office for possible charges.

The Ishpeming Police Department was assisted at the scene by accident investigators from the Michigan State Police, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, the Motor Carrier Division of the Michigan State Police, Michigan State Police troopers from the Negaunee Post, the Ishpeming Township Police Department, the Negaunee Police Department, Bell Hospital EMS, and the Ishpeming Volunteer Fire Department.
