KINGSFORD – Herbert F. “Herb” Knudsen Jr., 85, of Kingsford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 17, 1928, in Kingsford, son of the late Herbert Sr. and Ellen (Bodine) Knudsen. Herb graduated from Kingsford High School in 1946, and was a lifelong resident of the area.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving his country in Japan from 1946-48. Herb married Doris Chapman on April 17, 1954, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain and she preceded him in death on March 31, 2012.
He was employed by Wisconsin Electric Power Co. for more than 30 years, retiring in 1992. Herb sat on the Kingsford City Council for 35 years, serving four terms as mayor, and was instrumental in starting the Kingsford Heights picnic. As a token of gratitude for his years of dedicated service, the city of Kingsford named a street and a pavilion after Herb.
He was a member of Pine Grove Country Club, the American Legion Post 363 in Kingsford, the Kiwanis Ski Club where he served as a past president and Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church where he sat on the church council for many years.
Herb was an avid sports fan and enjoyed golfing. He faithfully followed the Maize & Blue and U of M teams. Herb and his wife, Doris, never missed a home or away Flivver football game and especially enjoyed watching their grandchildren play sports. Spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him much happiness.
He is survived by one son, Jon (Wendy) of Breitung Township; two daughters, Kathy (Donn) Edwards of Kingsford and Laura Brodersen of Iron Mountain; five grandchildren, Kary Edwards, Josh (Sam) Edwards, Megan Clows, Danielle (James) Perri and Derek Knudsen; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Herb was preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Edwards; two sisters, Ada Christesen and Thelma Syrjanen; and a brother, Gifford Knudsen.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow at noon at the church. Rev. Lee Liverance will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park.
Pallbearers will be Josh Edwards, Derek Knudsen, David, James, and Tom Christesen, and Kevin West.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial scholarship at Kingsford High School will be established in Herb’s memory.
