Flivvers bow in semifinal
PETOSKEY – Kingsford’s run in the MHSAA Division 2 softball playoffs came to an end Saturday, as the Flivvers fell to eventual district champion Escanaba 7-1 in a semifinal.
“We played a very good team today and they beat us,” Flivvers coach Kevin Murdock said. “We will learn from this and be a better team next year.”
Kingsford and Esky were tied 1-1 through two and a half innings before the Eskymos struck for three runs in the bottom of the third.
Janay Walters, Maria Wiltzius and Emily Murdock all had two of the Flivvers’ nine hits, Walters clubbing a pair of doubles and driving in the lone Flivvers’ run.
Murdock took the loss in the circle, allowing 11 Esky hits. She walked five and struck out four.
Jaymie Frappier earned the win for Esky, going six innings and allowing four hits and walk while striking out five. Escanaba went on to defeat Cheboygan 7-2 in the district final.
Kingsford finished its season with 16 wins.
“I am really proud of everything that we accomplished this year and look forward to Flivver softball’s future,” Murdock said.
