Iron County Museum grand opening today

CASPIAN – Sate Rep. Scott Dianda will kick off the Iron County Historical Museum’s grand opening celebration when he arrives on Saturday, May 31 at 10 a.m.

Dianda will honor the museum by presenting House Bill 363, the official tribute resolution declaring June 2014 as Log Cabin History Month in Michigan.

Iron County Historical Museum has been selected for this honor because it is the site of more log cabins than any other place in Michigan. The Log Cabin Society of Michigan documents more than 100 other log cabin sites in the state.

The 23 log structures at the museum are all of historic significance. There are continuing efforts to record and preserve the unique features of each building.

Donated by local families, each log building was moved to the museum grounds between the 1960s and 1989. They came from many locations in Iron County, including Beechwood, Amasa, Iron River, and Stambaugh townships.

The buildings include the Ranta, Koski, Peterson, and Johnson cabins; the Maki Sauna; Soderquist and Puotinen log barns; and the Sharrad Logging Camp complex.

Museum founders Harold and Marcia Bernhardt will also be present at the celebration, to view the newly installed memorial plate which indicates the name of the outdoor Cultural Center in their honor.

The Golden K men will make and serve a pancake brunch for all from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Displays and programs relating to log cabins will be featured throughout June. Of special significance will be a Log Cabin Workshop on June 28. The workshop welcomes registration by anyone interested in log cabins.

Paid admission for the grand opening celebration includes the ceremony, pancake brunch, visits to the gift shop, and tour of the grounds.

The log cabins, LeBlanc Wildlife Gallery and indoor facilities will remain open. Admission cost for the day is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and children are free with a paying adult.
