Floyd Menghini

LORETTO – Floyd C. Menghini, 97, of Loretto, died Friday, May 23, 2014, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

He was born on April 22, 1917, in Norway, the son of the late Florian and Edith (Taverini) Menghini.

Floyd married Dorothy P. Schindler on May 1, 1943, in St. Stephen Catholic Church in Loretto. She preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 2007.

He served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, where he took 22 trips across the Atlantic Ocean onboard the USS Wakefield, carrying U.S. Troops into battle, wounded and German prisoners back to the U.S.

Floyd worked on the Mackinaw Bridge and road construction for Lindberg and Bacco Construction.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors.

He was a member of St. Barbara Catholic Church in Vulcan.

Floyd is survived by his sons, Bill (Barb) Menghini of Norway and Ron (Jackie) Menghini of Loretto; daughters Judy (Michael) Dapoz of Loretto and Shirley (Dick) LaValley of Loretto; grandchildren Diane (Joe) Stanchina, David (Debbie) Dapoz, Mary Beth (Jeff) Oberthaler, Joe (Cathy) Menghini, Terra Menghini-Cox (John) Cox, Jim (Barb) Menghini, John (Brook) LaValley and Kristen (Andy) LaValley; 17 great-grandchildren; brother Wallace (Gwen) Menghini of Kingsford; brother-in-law Robert Johnson of Norway; sisters-in-law Marge Menghini of Kingsford and Ruth Schindler of Shawano, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandson Mark Menghini; brothers Ernest, Robert, Clarence, Herman, Rudolph and August Menghini and his sister Ann Zeni.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 27, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Barbara Catholic Church in Vulcan.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the church with Fr. Joseph Gouin presiding.

Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery.
