IM softball finishes regular season
ISHPEMING – Iron Mountain dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Westwood Patriots Thursday, falling 18-2 and 10-6 in the regular-season finale for the Mountaineers.
Game 1 was knotted 1-1 after one, but Patriots walked to a 8-1 lead after 2.
“Our pitching went south for the rest of the game,” IM coach Dean Lefebvre said. “We walked 16 batters through four innings, can’t wins games that way.”
Scoring hits for the Mountaineers was Alena Herman with a single and Ally Weslin with a single and a triple.
After a motivational speech to the team by Lefebvre, the Mountaineers came out and battled seven innings with Westwood in the second game.
“I figured we had nothing to lose so I used an honest talk about attitude and effort,” Lefebvre said. “It seemed to work.”
Denae Brock pitched the entire game, allowing eight hits, walking seven and striking out five. On the offensive side Herman had a single and a double, Caitlin Jonson had a triple, Weslin had two singles and Brock had two singles.
The Mountaineers finished the regular season 1-23.
“I had hoped for a better record our first year in high school softball, but wins and losses don’t represent the true victories on the field,” Lefebvre noted.
The Mountaineers open district play Wednesday, May 28, at Gwinn.
