KINGSFORD – Mona Cathryn Powell, 87, of Kingsford, died Friday, May 16, 2014, at Evergreen Assisted Living in Kingsford.
She was born on June 16, 1926, in Iron Mountain, the daughter of the late Samuel and Kathryn (Hauinstein) Frick.
Mona graduated from Kingsford High School in 1944, received her nursing degree from Michael Reese Memorial Hospital in Chicago, and her bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University.
Mona was a registered nurse for the VA Hospital for more than 40 years, retiring in 1988. She was also the parish nurse at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, where she was an active member. She also belonged to LCW at her church.
She married George Powell on Jan. 9, 1949, in Mississippi. He preceded her in death in 1988.
Mona enjoyed traveling, crocheting, volunteering, and senior citizen programs. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and helping to raise them.
She is survived by three children, Thomas (Leone) Powell of Traverse City, Mary (Scott) Silver of Silverthorne, Colo., and Kathryn (Jim) Young of Kingsford; one sister, Ruth Frick of Milwaukee; and five grandchildren, Joe Powell of Traverse City, Mary (Parker) Hall of Traverse City, Calvin (Erin) Silver of Houston, Mark (Amy) Young of San Jose, Calif., and Katie (Dennis) Carter of Arlington, Ill.
Private family services will be held.
Burial will be in the Quinnesec Cemetery.
