Iron Mountain’s Catherine Martin, mother of California Chrome co-owner Perry Martin, watched the Kentucky Derby from right-up-close.

Catherine and Perry along with family members grabbed spots on the rail next to the track. However, the mother and son missed seeing California Chrome cross the finish line. They were hugging each other for the sweet final moments.

“It was wonderful, wonderful,” said Catherine, becoming a national celebrity with her name tied to California Chrome stories in major publications. “My son won the race.”

California Chrome is getting better and bigger, according to Perry.

“Every race he keeps getting better,” Martin said. “He is growing, he has put on more muscle, and believe it or not he is getting taller.”

By the way, Catherine, 83, is my kind of gal. She wasn’t wild about the Kentucky Derby’s mint julep but preferred a hot dog and a cold beer.

Catherine and friends will be watching today’s Preakness in Iron Mountain. Go California Chrome! …

Justin Florek of the Boston Bruins is a Northern Michigan University graduate.

The Marquette native, who has played with the Bruins and Providence this season, majored in community health. He was 18 credits short after four years at NMU, but earned the diploma after summer and online courses.

“I made it a goal to myself, my coach at college, and to my family that I’d get that degree,” Florek told the Boston Globe. “I chipped away at it the last two years. I finally got it.” …
