Flivver tennis fights off wind and Menominee

MENOMINEE – Kingsford, with seven of eight matches going three sets, outlasted Menominee 5-3 in high school boys tennis Tuesday.

“Cold and wind neutralized play,” said Flivvers coach Mark Shanks, noting the Maroons were missing their No. 3 singles. “We are very close and competitive but they have a lot of match play on us.”

The Flivvers will host Norway in a make-up match today.

KINGSFORD – The Mountaineers split their singles and doubles matches in the boys tennis draw with the Patriots.

Iron Mountain Coach Greg Stegall noted Jacob Mongrain outlasting the Patriots’ Michael Ostlund in three sets (6-3, 5-7, 10-8).

“Jacob has skill potential,” said Stegall, citing the sophomore’s hand and eye coordination. “When he gets it together he plays nice tennis. He beat a good opponent.”

Iron Mountain (1-0-1) hosts Norway on Thursday.
