Victorious start for Iron Mountain tennis

IRON MOUNTAIN – Iron Mountain, powered by a doubles sweep, downed Ishpeming 5-3 in the Mountaineers’ high school boys tennis season opener Monday at Amos Marston Eastside Courts.

The Hematites claimed three of the four singles matches. Iron Mountain’s point came from No. 3 singles Jordan Wadge.

Iron Mountain took doubles with four two-set decisions from No. 1 Sawyer Kujala-Danny Willman; No. 2 Trevor Schettler-Cole Rossato; No. 3 Pat Merkel-Marco Savarin, and No. 4 Trent Juul-Tyson Wadge.

“I’m satisfied overall,” Mountaineer coach Greg Stegall said. “Ishpeming has got some good talent.”

Stegall cited Mountaineer senior Craig Qualley, a first-year player at No. 4 singles.

“Qualley is a good athlete and had his hands full with (Mark Holmgren in a three-set loss), Stegall said.

Iron Mountain will face Westwood today at Kingsford High School.
