Jack Kriegl did some great things.

I’ve always regarded Jack as the finest program emcee, highlighting the annual Florence High School awards night with interesting facts and good humor. I always roared at the jokes that started out, “Dave LaPoint and Bob Wolfe were in a boat fishing “

Nobody has made a better softball catch than Jack in the Rhinelander Hodag fastpitch tournament. He soared above the fence and appeared to pull the ball out of nowhere to rob a home run.

The greatest achievement for the Florence administrator and teacher? Had to be as a proud father to Joe, John, Aundrea and Jaclynn during their Bobcat days. I was there when he popped more than a couple buttons when Jaclynn closed her track career with a sensational performance at the state meet.

My sympathy to Simone and family on this great man’s passing …

Notes from the ninth annual Green Bay Packers Tailgate Tour that made surprise stops at Norway High School and the Oscar G. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center: Packers CEO Mark Murphy confirmed the signing of back-up quarterback Matt Flynn. “I love Matt Flynn but I hope he never plays,” quipped Murphy, hoping that Aaron Rodgers stays injury-free … James Lofton, a wide receiver in the Packer and Pro Football halls of fame, noticed the Norway High School track record board and was impressed with Dani Gagne’s accomplishments … Also appearing were Packer Hall of Famers’ Paul Coffman and Lynn Dickey plus linebacker Brad Jones, defensive back Jarrett Bush and kicker Mason Crosby … The Packers didn’t make a perfunctory appearance at the VA’s Community Living Center. They sat down with the residents, answered any questions, signed autographs and, first and foremost, thanked them all for serving our country … Lofton was not the first Packer with Stanford ties to visit the Iron Mountain VA. Lester Archambeau, a Packer defensive end in the early 1990s, went from room-to-room talking to patients … Hermansville’s Frank Rodman, a VA volunteer, wound up on the Packer Web site. He was photographed with Jones and Bush …

Former Northern Michigan and Michigan State hockey coach Rick Comley “fully enjoys his job scouting free agent college players for the Chicago Blackhawks,” reports Tim Staudt of the Lansing State Journal.

“He misses coaching after 38 years and retiring” three seasons ago from MSU,” wrote Staudt, adding Comley earned a Stanley Cup championship ring from the Blackhawks.

Comley resides in Marquette …
