MARQUETTE – The Kingsford boys were an unknown quantity to many people coming into this track season.

Now they know all about the Flivvers, who ran away with the Marquette Division 1 Indoor Invitational title Tuesday by scoring 113 1/2 points at Northern Michigan University’s Superior Dome.

They were followed by Menominee 72 1/2 and Negaunee 65.

“We definitely have a lot of positives coming out of this meet,” said Kingsford coach Doug Roberts. “The kids trained hard and today they competed hard.”

Senior Ryan Camp set a meet record in pole vault, with a leap of 13 feet, 1/4 inch.

“Getting into the pit definitely helps,” Camp said following a brief celebration with several of his teammates. “It was nice having my teammates around. They made suggestions about where I needed to place the standard and what I needed to do to adjust my steps. Now, I need to get a longer and heavier pole.”

Senior Jacob Allen captured the 800-meter run in two minutes, 7.22 seconds and helped the Flivvers win the 1600 and 3200 relays.

“I wanted to do a real fast first lap, then open my stride and kind of control the pace in the second and third,” said Allen. “Then, I opened it up again in the fourth lap. It was real important to get the lead and hold it. I think that tends to put a little more pressure on the other guys.

“In the 3200 relay we ran about as fast as we did in the U.P. Finals last year. We have a lot of balance on our team. We have guys for everything.”

Kingsford senior Cole Tengesdahl added a first in the 55 at 6.85 seconds, edging Menominee’s Aeron Forsberg by .04 second.

“Jacob had a phenomenal meet and Ryan had a meet record and personal best, which is awesome,” said Roberts. “Our whole team had a great day.”

Houghton junior Jacob Colling set a meet record in the 3200 at 10:05.95, nearly 17 seconds ahead of the field.

The Marquette girls retained their title with 140 1/2 points, followed by Menominee 72 1/2 and Negaunee 65.

Marquette sophomore Lindsey Rudden set a meet record in the 1600 (5:13.18) and won the 800 (2:21.45), outdueling Menominee senior Kameron Burmeister in each race, and helped the Redettes take the 1600 relay.

Kingsford junior Jaelyn Jennings was runner-up in the 55 hurdles (9.95). The Flivvers also had a second in the 800 relay.

“We have a few highlights to take away from this meet,” said Kingsford coach Lisa Harry. “Jaelyn had some nice performance and Hannah Tresedder had a solid day. If you place anywhere in a meet with this many teams, it’s quite an accomplishment. This was a good meet to see what the girls need to work on.”

Kingsford’s girls have nine returnning letter winners this spriung after losing three members of their record-setting 800-meter relay team in Carlee Benzie, Emma Williams and Andrea Roell.

“We did acquire a few speedy replacements from the freshman class so that will help,” Harry said. “Overall, this year’s team has been very positive and fun to work with. They have been working hard and will continue to learn and grow from each meet. I look forward to watching them improve as the track season goes on.”

The Flivvers are idle until April 24 when they host Menominee.
