Police warn of IRS phone scam
MARQUETTE – The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office has reported recent incidents regarding an IRS phone scam requesting payment of “back taxes.”
The caller may state that he or she is an agent with the IRS and request a certain amount of money to be paid with a money order.
Victims may also receive a “spoofed” call from a person claiming to be a law enforcement officer with a warrant for their arrest.
A “spoofed” call will show up on caller ID as any number the “spoofer” selects, in this case a local law enforcement agency.
The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office has reminded the public that the IRS will not contact a citizen requesting payment of “back taxes.”
Anyone receiving these types of calls should immediately hang up. The phone number in the most recent incident was (202) 241-6439.
