Track practice finally moves outside
By BURT ANGELI
KINGSFORD – The long winter has not put a damper on the Kingsford High School boys track team.
The 43-man Flivvers, who competed last month in Eagle River, Wis., have been “working very hard.”
“I’m very happy with the turnout,” said Coach Doug Roberts, who launched practice March 10. “We have spent a lot of time practicing indoors and are happy we are finally able to get some work in on the track.”
Kingsford was able to practice outside briefly when practice began in March. Those outside drills ended until this week.
The Flivvers, in the indoor meet at the Northland Pines High School fieldhouse, placed second out of nine teams in the varsity portion of the meet. The Kingsford jayvees wound up first out of eight squads.
“Overall, we were happy with our times and distances and look forward to getting better each meet,” Roberts said.
Jack Glodowski, with a real good meet, led the Flivvers with 23 points.
Glodowski took third in long jump, fourth in triple jump and fifth in the 400-meter run along with helping the 1600 relay (Jaxson Ferree, Jake Allen and Tyler Roberts) to second.
Cole Tengesdahl, 2013 U.P. Division 1 champion in the 100-meter dash (11.26), “looked good in the 55 (2nd, 7.02) and 200 (5th).”
Roberts was also pleased with the winning 3200 (Austin Stanchina, Lucas Jennings, Taylor Wickman, Allen, 9:00.59) and 800 relays (Quintin Pratt, Tengesdahl, Ferree and Roberts, 1:40.18) as well as the 1600 relay.
Ed Sexton and Dan Fleming stood out in hurdles. Fleming captured the 200 (28.93) and grabbed fifth in 55; Sexton was second in the 55 and third in the 200.
Jake Allen added to his “good night” with a fourth in the 800. Jennings tacked on a fourth in the 1600 run.
Kingsford’s roster contains 11 seniors, 9 juniors, 16 sophomores and 7 freshman. Senior Ryan Camp was U.P. Division I pole vault runner-up while junior Tyler Roberts raced to second in the 400.
“Our upperclassman leadership has been great,” coach Roberts said. “They get to practice every day and work hard.”
