WHITING, Ind. – Harry F. “Toppy” Jacobson, 75, of Whiting, formerly of Iron Mountain, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago.
Beloved husband of Carol (nee Mikula) Jacobson; loving father of Debbie (Bill) Gazda, Jeff (Fiance Laurie Brown) Jacobson, Brian (Jen) Jacobson, and Carolyn (Chris) Sarvanidis; caring grandfather to Abigail, Emily, Jake, Kyle and Ryan; dearest brother of Dorothy (Max) Davis of Kansas and Bradden “Tippy” Jacobson of Minnesota; dear uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents, Evar and Winifred Jacobson of Iron Mountain. Harry will be greatly missed by his family, neighbors, and all his golf buddies.
Harry loved his childhood home of Iron Mountain in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He was an avid golfer (with two holes-in-one, by the way) who loved a good card game and just enjoying time with the family. His grandkids were his pride and joy.
Harry graduated from Michigan Tech University in 1961 with a degree in metallurgical engineering, which brought him to Indiana and Youngstown Steel. It was there he met his beautiful wife Carol of 49 years and they made Whiting their home. His career also took him to Amoco, Pullman Standard, Motorola, and the Horsehoe Casino before finally retiring in 2008 to spend more time with his family.
A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, April 10, at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting, Ind., from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., www.baranfh.com (219)659-4400.
