I thought only Kingsford’s Art Viens could replace the late Don “Ducky” Perrin of Marquette on Northern Michigan University’s basketball scorebook duties. Now I find out that Jimmy St. Onge has been filling those enormous shoes since 2005.

“Ducky” marked scorebook for NMU and high school basketball tournament games at CB Hedgcock Fieldhouse. When “Ducky” and Dave St. Onge drew officiating assignments, Art Viens took over the scorebook.

“Ducky willed it to him (Jimmy),” Dave said. “Art and Ducky were flawless and took their position seriously.”

“Ducky” is still missed …

Kingsford’s Kevin Gravel and St. Cloud State (Minn.) bowed out of the NCAA hockey tourney with a loss to Minnesota.

Gravel, one of four SCSU seniors, had an opportunity to turn pro after last season. The co-captain and defenseman is a Los Angeles Kings draft pick.

“In a time when a lot of players are going early to the pros, we’ve had guys stick around when they’ve had a chance to leave,” SCSU Coach Bob Motzko told Mick Hatten of the St. Cloud Times. “That’s because they believe in this program and their teammates.

“We’ve been going in the right direction. I just wish we’d still be playing in two weeks.”

Gravel’s agent, according to Hatten, is working on an entry-level deal with the Kings …

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh was at Madison Square Garden for Michigan State’s NCAA basketball game Sunday with UConn. He was sitting next to Jerry Rosburg, Ravens associate head coach and special teams coordinator. I’m guessing Rosburg, a former Northern Michigan University assistant coach and roommate of Tommy Izzo and Steve Mariucci, arranged the prime seats.

Indiana basketball coach Tom Crean noticed Harbaugh, his brother-in-law, wearing a Michigan State hat. Crean jokingly “tweeted” that he planned to purchase a Steelers and Patriots “lid.” …
