Daphne J. Maahs

NORWAY – Daphne J. Maahs, born Oct. 13, 1926, in Negaunee, daughter of Joseph and Doris (Perring) Dally, died at home surrounded by family and went to heaven on April 1, 2014, to join the love of her life, her husband Victor, who preceded her in death in September 1991.

Daphne was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, educator, animal lover, and motorcycle enthusiast. She traveled throughout 29 U.S. states during her 46 years of marriage. She taught K-8 and junior college in lower Michigan for several years. She was a graduate of Milwaukee Art Academy and Northern Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in Education. Daphne was also a volunteer for the Dickinson County Illiteracy Program, a supporter of the Almost Home Animal Shelter and the Because of Mandy Rescue.

Her son Terry J. Maahs preceded her in death in July 1997.

She is survived by a son, Dale (Sharon) Maahs of Vulcan; daughter, Joan Maahs (Douglas DeGroot) of Norway; daughter, Wendy (Richard) Elder of Norway; grandchildren, Melissa (Carey) Hirte, Jason (Amber) Maahs; great-grandchildren, Brittani Hirte (Croy Smith), Austin (Ashley) Hirte, MacKenna Hirte, Alexis Maahs, Axel Maahs; a great-great-grandchild, Michael Hirte; and her adored niece, Peggy (Steve) Woodward of Sante Fe, N.M.; a very special cousin, Linda Davel of Madison, Wis.; many nieces and nephews; and her heartfelt, loved, furry companions that were always at her bedside, her pups: Abigail, Pochita, and Te’a.

At her request, there will be no public funeral service. Her family will have a private celebration of Daphne’s love of the Lord, her family and her full, enriched life.
