Keith E. Mitchell

CASPIAN – Keith E. Mitchell, 86, of Caspian, passed away on Monday, March 31, 2014, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls.

He was born Aug. 31, 1927, in Iron River, son of the late Edward and Esther (Mattson) Mitchell. Keith entered the Merchant Marines at age 17, and served one year. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp and served during World War II and the Korean War. Keith was honorably discharged after five years of service, returned home and graduated from Iron River High School.

He married Elvira Franzoi on Sept. 25, 1954, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian. Keith worked for M.A. Hannah Mining Co. for 33 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Progressive Men of Caspian, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and the American Legion.

Keith was an avid outdoorsman and had a passion for trout fishing and bird hunting. He also enjoyed deer hunting, spending time at camp, traveling and doing projects around the house.

Keith is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elvira; a son, Louis (Diane) Mitchell of Pewaukee, Wis.; a daughter, Ann (Mark) Truax of Caspian; three grandchildren, Adam and Laura Truax and Megan Mitchell; and three great-grandchildren, Cameron, Anthony and Aaron.

Private family memorial services will be held.

Burial will be in the Stambaugh Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian.
