Verna Mae Dishaw
SAGOLA – Verna Mae Dishaw, 97, of Sagola, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls.
She was born on July 22, 1916, in Dunbar, Wis., to Dan and Laura McGregor. As a young girl she moved with her family to Sagola, where she spent the rest of her life. Verna graduated from Channing High School.
She married Glenn Dishaw on March 9, 1935, and he preceded her in death in 1990. They had five children. Verna was very proud of her home, and she especially loved to bake. Saturday was “baking day” and the aroma of fresh buns and sweet rolls was always in the air. She worked at McCole’s Grocery Store in Sagola for many years and later worked at the Sagola Senior Citizen’s Center. She enjoyed bowling in a league and playing Michigan Rummy with a group of friends. She was also active in her church, Grace Presbyterian in Sagola.
Verna is survived by her daughter, Karen (Keith) Rust of Buffalo, Minn.; and special daughters-in-law, Pat Dishaw of Mansfield and Elaine Dishaw of Racine, Wis. She also leaves grandchildren, Shirley Dishaw Beck, Sharon Nickels, Mike Dishaw, Pete Dishaw, Joe Dishaw, Kathy Springberg, Brian Ochetti, Jon Ochetti, Kellie Werman and Kaytee Dishaw. She is further survived by 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Verna was preceded in death by her sons, Neil, Lyle, Duane and Bradley; and by her sisters and brothers, Esther Bruette, Marie Van Oss, James “Bub” McGregor, Orland “Bud” McGregor and Earl McGregor.
Visitation will be on Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola.
A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
Burial will be in the Channing Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church in Verna’s memory.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Iron County Medical Care Facility for providing compassionate care to Verna for many years.
