“Passionate” Dion Brown, arguably the finest former NMU defensive back coaching U.P. high school football, takes over the Gwinn program this fall.

“Our goal will be to reach the state playoffs,” said Brown, a two-time all-GLIAC and MVP defensive back with the Wildcats. “We’re going to shock a lot of people next season. We have the talent to do it.”

The Modeltowners have been playoff spectators since 1999. They haven’t been above .500 since 2000.

Brown, a former Ishpeming assistant, notes 15 to 20 players in the weight room since November and one of the MPC’s best backs in Devin Dachs.

“I’m an outgoing guy who loves to coach,” Brown said …
