IRON MOUNTAIN – Students and parents let the Iron Mountain School District know that they wanted art back in the classroom for students in grades 4-6.

And the school district has answered that request by announcing that the art curriculum has been reinstated for the students in grades 4-6 for the 2014-15 school year.

This year, the art program for students in early kindergarten through the third grade at North Elementary School has been taught by Beth Hart and Cheryl Pugh.

The art instructors have been using a program, Art in Action, which is a nonprofit organization since 1982 that’s dedicated to bringing visual arts education to the classroom.

“Art in Action fosters the educational development and creativity of children across America through innovative visual arts programs and communities,” Hart and Pugh said.

They added that the program’s philosophy is that a quality art education is critical for every student to prepare them for success in the 21st century. The program actively assists schools in implementing a comprehensive, standards-based visual arts program.

Art in Action is a program that has also been designed to meet the state’s common core standards.

“These standards will ensure that students leave school with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in college and their careers,” Hart said.

Pugh agreed. “The Art in Action curriculum provides a broad range of ways to integrate our visual arts curriculum with other core subjects, especially language arts and math,” she said.

The students at North Elementary School have been studying different artists and their artwork throughout the school year.

The projects they have completed so far have tied in with the work of these famous artists.

Hart and Pugh have been using many different art genres with their students this year through the Art in Action Program.
