IM-K Zonta sponsoring Young Women in Science Scholarships
IRON MOUNTAIN – The Zonta Club of Iron Mountain-Kingsford is again sponsoring up to eight Young Women in Science Scholarships aboard the Inland Seas schooner sailing ship.
The Inland Seas sailing program was founded to enhance public understanding and stewardship of the Great Lakes and the world’s freshwater systems through experimental shipboard and onshore educational programs.
These scholarships pay the costs for the young women selected to participate in the program.
Scholarships are open to young women who will have completed the 9-11th grades by summer from Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Norway, Niagara, North Dickinson, Florence, Pembine, Crystal Falls, Iron River and who have demonstrated an interest in the science fields. This year, the dates will be Saturday and Sunday, June 28-29, departing from Escanaba marina and returning to the Fayette St. Park marina in the Garden Peninsula of Upper Michigan.
More information is available about the Inland Seas programs on the website at www.schoolship.org.
Young women are encouraged to apply. Previous participants in the program continually say what a good time they had aboard the ship sailing and conducting experiments.
Also, any parent who feels that he or she may have a daughter interested in such an opportunity is encouraged to have her apply for the scholarship. Emphasis will be placed on a demonstrated interest in these fields of work as opposed to strictly academics.
Applications are available in each high school guidance office and are due to the respective school counselors by April 3. You may also contact Lynne Reed 774-1931, ext. 122 for more information.
