William Juneau Sr.

IRON MOUNTAIN – William G. Juneau Sr., 93, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.

He was born on Oct. 13, 1920, in Escanaba, son of the late Joseph A. and Mary C. (Garland) Juneau. He attended Kingsford Schools, graduating from Kingsford High School in 1938. Bill went on to attend Alexian Brothers School of Nursing in Chicago and graduated as a licensed registered nurse.

Bill married Irene H. Matza at American Martyrs Catholic Church on Aug. 14, 1941, and she preceded him in death on April 27, 2009.

He enlisted in the United States Army during World War II, and was a survivor of the Battle of Bastogne. After serving his country proudly and being honorably discharged, he returned to the area and went to work at the Iron Mountain VA Medical Center which was just opening up. He worked as a registered nurse there until his retirement in 1978.

Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening and snowmobiling. He was past president of the Michigan Nursing Association. He was a faithful member of his church, American Martyrs Catholic Church. Bill loved his family, his church, and his special “family” at Family Ties Adult Day Care.

Bill is survived by his children, William (Marcia) Juneau Jr. of Iron Mountain, Karen Juneau of Kingsford, Albert (Linda) Juneau Sr. of East Kingsford, Joseph Juneau of Florida and John Juneau (Leon Steinbrecher) of East Kingsford; eight grandchildren, Steve and Nick Schoen, Mason Axberg (Samantha Riedel), Daron (Jennifer) Juneau, Albert Juneau Jr. (Martin Senn), Michael Juneau, Lori Juneau and Catherine Juneau; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John “Rick” Juneau; and a sister, Anncella Colberg.

Visitation will be on Friday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Kingsford Funeral Home.

The funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in the Quinnesec Cemetery. Bill’s family will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.
