Wisconsin standout Nigel Hayes, a 6-foot-7, 250-pound forward, played for Crystal Falls’ Bruce Smith at Toledo (Ohio) Whitmer High School.

Smith, a coach for 35 years, no longer leads the Whitmer program. But the son of Stu and Phyllis did return to the coaching ranks this season at Sylvania (Ohio) Southview High School.

Smith, 56, guided Whitmer to the Division 1 state tournament twice including runner-up in 2012.

“Basketball coaching is a passion of mine and that’s pretty obvious,” Smith told the Toledo Blade. “I love it. It’s a great profession.”

Dickinson Amateur Hockey Association’s Hall Orthodontics are after the Bantam B state title in Gaylord.

This isn’t a new experience for these kids as all but one have played on previous state championship squads. Seven players – Eli Langston, Chase Kreski, Ben Schroeder, Sawyer Perpich, Dempsey Lauridsen, Trevor Anderson and Peter Ropiak – are aiming for a third state medal.

Michael James, a four-sport athlete at Sault Ste. Marie High School, will play football at Michigan Tech. He’s also a Blue Devil letterwinner in basketball, wrestling and baseball.

“We’ve always stressed to all our guys to play as many sports as you can,” Sault football coach Scott Menard said. “You learn to handle different situations as an athlete, and how to adapt to different roles with different teams.” …

From Brad Dickson, Omaha.com: “Steve Holcomb led the U.S. two-man bobsled team to a bronze medal, breaking a 62-year drought. Four years ago, Holcomb led the four-man team to gold, breaking another 62-year drought. If the Chicago Cubs don’t sign this guy they’re nuts.” …

Kingsford Flivver girls basketball team continued a tradition prior to the district tourney game with Gladstone. They went into the stands to give hugs to Flivver faithful Don and Dorothy Edens.

“They’ve been awesome to us,” Flivver coach Mike Cross said.

Forest Park defeated Watersmeet 61-28 in the girls basketball regular season. Nimrods coach Norm Ellenberger didn’t expect much better results in this week’s district tourney.

“We played them earlier and got waxed,” Ellenberger told The Daily Globe. “I’m sure they didn’t run out of wax.”

True! Forest Park clipped Watersmeet 82-38 in Wednesday’s district semifinal.

“It was a good, old-fashioned butt-kickin,” Ellenberger said. “When they write about butt-kickin’ games, this one can get mentioned.” …
