First-round wins for state wrestlers

AUBURN HILLS – Five Iron Mountain and Norway high school wrestlers captured first-round matches in the MHSAA Division 4 individual state tournament at The Palace of Auburn Hills Thursday.

Iron Mountain’s once-beaten Jared Gauthier (125) decisioned Dustin Scott of Blanchard-Montabella, 7-4.

Teammate Alex Edwards won a major decision over Lucian Parish of Decatur, 13-4.

Iron Mountain added a third victory when Jacob Weslin (145) outscored David Erwin of Bronson, 6-4.

Two Mountaineers suffered first-round losses by pin. Corbin Henkel (135) bowed to Mason Groenhout of Addison and James Christiansen (189) fell to Nathan Philburn of Byron Area.

Norway’s Cole Gonzalez (140) topped Brendon Rodenburg of Kent City, 4-2. Taylor Bonetti (171) pinned Devon Kozel of Bangor.

Knights’ Zac Decremer (103) was pinned by Connor Krupp of New Lothrop.

State tournament continues today and concludes Saturday.
