Hematites blast WIC boys

ISHPEMING – An 18-0 run to start the game couldn’t have come at a better time for the Ishpeming Hematites, who are in the midst of playing three games in four days.

Ishpeming led 27-7 after one quarter and beat West Iron County 68-42 in non-conference action.

Ishpeming coach Jeff Olson said he emptied his bench early as every player scored and nearly all of them played two full quarters.

“We were just making shots and we were right in sync,” Olson said about the start. Overall, the Hematites sank 10 3-pointers.

Ishpeming (15-4) defeated Westwood at home on Monday and hosts Norway on Thursday, both M-PC games.

Alex Briones led the Hematites with 16 points, including four triples, while fellow senior Derek DeCaire scored eight, including two 3s. Another senior, Mitch Laurin, led the team with eight rebounds.

For WIC (3-15), Brock Hopkins scored 14 points.

Ishpeming also won the JV game, 52-33.

West Iron County hosts Iron Mountain to begin district play Monday.
