North Dickinson boys basketball

FELCH – Justin Clark posted a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead North Dickinson in a 64-44 Skyline boys basketball victory over Mid Peninsula Tuesday.

“I’m very pleased with the performance of our kids tonight,” North Dickinson coach Chris Mattson said. “Justin has been plying at a high level the past two weeks, and he did again tonight. He made 5-of-5 at the line, which was huge.”

The Nordics, making a point to spend time in free throws in recent practices, went 13-of-15 at the line.

“We’ve maybe lost a few games at the line, and tonight we fixed that,” Mattson said. “We made the free ones and got out of here with a win.”

Reggie Johnson added 10 points for ND, coming up with nine of those in the third quarter – including a couple of triples.

“This was a game of two pretty good defensive teams, but both teams didn’t shoot too well in the first half,” Mattson said. “Things started to heat up in the second half.”

Logan O’Neil was a third Nordic to reach double figures with 10 points.

“He played a real nice floor game,” Mattson said. “He only turned it over twice. All in all, we played very well.”

Mid Pen trailed 13-8 after the first quarter and 20-12 at halftime of the Skyline Conference match-up.

“We were real sluggish, although much of that had to do with their defense,” said Mid Pen coach Mark Branstrom. “We had been playing real well lately. We just couldn’t seem to get started. We’re much better than we showed tonight.”

Evan Winkelbauer led the Wolverines (3-15 overall, 2-10 Skyline) with 15 points and five assists. Chad Branstrom had 12 points.

“Give North Dickinson credit,” said coach Branstrom. “They hit their shots. We had some decent looks, but the ball wouldn’t drop. Our turnovers were crucial ones that led to fast break layups. We just played sluggish.”

North Dickinson’s jayvees also recorded a win.

The Nordics (10-7, 5-7) play Rapid River Friday.
