Norway upsets 1st place Patriots

NORWAY – Freshman Jordan Kraemer scored five points in the final two minutes to snap a 43-43 deadlock and Norway stunned league-leading Westwood 48-43 in Mid-Peninsula Conference girls basketball Tuesday.

The Patriots (12-7 overall, 9-2 MPC) rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half to create a tie.

Kraemer led the Knights with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Elizabeth Dauphinais-Van Buren netted 19 points and Caitlin Hewitt had 11 for the Patriots, who shot 5 of 24 from the free throw line.

“Westwood tries to put pressure on you so we practiced a lot there,” Knights coach Carli Kelly said. “It took a while to gel but we’re becoming a team.”

Norway, fueled by a 10-2 run, owned 19-7 lead after the first quarter.

Late in the second quarter, a basket by Logan Devine put Norway up 29-18 until Hewitt hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Early in the third quarter, Rachel Conery nailed a three-pointer to increase Norway’s lead to 32-22. But Westwood chipped away to 39-35 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Midway through the final quarter, Van Buren notched three consecutive baskets to tie the game at 41. When the game was knotted at 43, Kraemer took over from there.

“Hats off to all of them,” Kelly said of her much improved Knights.

Norway pulled down 43 rebounds, with 14 from Ashley Zanon. The Knights had 16 turnovers.

Norway (7-12, 4-8) hosts Kingsford in the regular season finale Thursday.
