Mountaineers prevail on road

MANISTIQUE – Iron Mountain, powered by a 21-4 second-quarter run, dumped Manistique 48-36 in Mid-Peninsula Conference girls basketball Monday.

The Mountaineers (2-16 overall, 1-10 MPC) halted a losing streak that started in mid-December.

“The things we’ve been stressing all year clicked,” IM Coach Ginger Moore said. “It was a team effort where everybody came ready to play.”

Senior Elli McCole’s 14 points and 13 rebounds led the Mountaineers. Marti Pirkola (12) and Alena Herman (11) also helped Iron Mountain control the backboards.

“A big thing was our perimeter was much much more aggressive going to the hole,” Moore noted.

Iron Mountain also overcame 21 turnovers.

“I’m super duper proud of them,” Moore said. “This should give them validation for all the hard work they’ve put it.”

The Mountaineers host Gwinn tonight.

Iron Mountain’s junior varsity, behind 16 points apiece from Olivia Truscott and Anni Cevigney, spilled Manistique 53-29.
